Charleston Visitors Guide

Welcome to Charleston, South Carolina! Here in the lowcountry, we truly have something for everyone. In my family, we have four distinct viewpoints on what vacation should look like, but we all enjoy the Charleston area (so much that we choose to call it home). When I’m in a new city, I like to hit the streets, see the sights, and take in the culture. My oldest son likes to learn about the area’s history, while my youngest enjoys kid-friendly outdoor activities. My husband just wants directions to the nearest golf course! Below is a list of our favorite lowcountry Read more…

Reflections on a Southern Snow

When 2018 began, there was snow in the forecast for Charleston, SC. The meteorologists said we could get up to three inches, but I was skeptical. I couldn’t imagine anything more than a dusting – not even enough to cover the grass. This is my fourth winter here in Charleston. Every year, my six-year-old asks, “When is it going to snow?” Every time, I tell him, “It isn’t going to snow, sweetheart. We live in Charleston. It never snows here.” We lived in Norfolk, VA, when he was a toddler, so he has seen snow, but he doesn’t remember it. Read more…

Three Charleston Art Galleries for Finding Local Art

One of my favorite things to do in Charleston is stroll through the many impressive art galleries. Charleston’s vibrant and diverse art scene rivals those of much larger cities. If you’re not an experienced art collector, some of the Charleston art galleries can be a bit intimidating (not to mention expensive), so let me tell you about three places where you’ll find friendly artists and beautiful local art. These are all within easy walking distance of Read more…

Charleston Restaurant Guide

Let Charleston charm you with its amazing lowcountry cuisine! I’ve visited and enjoyed every restaurant on this list. I’ll continue to add new favorites as I discover them. My restaurant guide is arranged by geographic area, so you won’t have to travel far when you’re hungry. I’ve indicated restaurants that I consider “kid friendly,” which means I would take my two squirmy little boys there. I always recommend calling ahead to verify hours and make a reservation. Enjoy! Downtown Charleston – Lower Peninsula (south of Calhoun St.) Miller’s All Day – 120 King St., Charleston. $$ Breakfast, Lunch. I recommend: Read more…

Five Favorite Charleston Restaurants

Before I moved to Charleston three years ago, I began looking at local restaurant menus online. I knew I would fall in love with lowcountry cuisine when I read Hominy Grill’s menu, where deep fried cheese grits are listed under the heading “Vegetables.” I’ve visited more than 30 restaurants in the Charleston area, and I feel like I’ve just scratched the surface. I could dine out once a week for years without visiting the same place twice. Here are a few of my favorite places to experience Charleston’s delightful cuisine: Hominy Grill – This is a great place to taste Read more…
