Progress in Our Family Room

Our family room is looking a bit more up-to-date these days. Like everything else in our home, it’s a work in progress! I’m going for a “collected” look throughout the house, and curating takes time. The changes are happening slowly, but they are happening! Remember what it looked like when we moved in?

Eventually, I want to paint the family room (and foyer and hallways) light gray to match my home office, but I have to hire a professional painter for that job. The ceiling needs to be painted, and it’s about twenty feet high. This girl is not climbing up there to paint it! Nope. Not happening. Instead, I just painted the back walls of the bookshelves for now. I think it made a huge difference!

Another big change in our family room is the new sofa from Joybird. I admit I was hesitant to order a custom sofa online without actually sitting in a similar one first, but I couldn’t be happier with my decision. Check out this before and after:

We finally said goodbye to our 17-year-old leather recliner. I wanted something stylish, but my husband still wanted to be able to put his feet up, so I chose Joybird’s Braxton Sectional in Key Largo Zenith Teal. I love the upholstery, the color, the comfort – all of it! Derek loves it too, so I think we found the perfect compromise. I also replaced the rug with this neutral, geometric one from Rugs USA. Now I need to decide what to do with this space:

I’d like to add a small sofa or loveseat here for maximum seating capacity. I’m considering one in cognac leather or one in gray fabric. Which would you choose? Let me know in the comments!
