Five Favorite Charleston Restaurants

Before I moved to Charleston three years ago, I began looking at local restaurant menus online. I knew I would fall in love with lowcountry cuisine when I read Hominy Grill’s menu, where deep fried cheese grits are listed under the heading “Vegetables.” I’ve visited more than 30 restaurants in the Charleston area, and I feel like I’ve just scratched the surface. I could dine out once a week for years without visiting the same place twice. Here are a few of my favorite places to experience Charleston’s delightful cuisine:

Hominy Grill

Hominy Grill – This is a great place to taste some classic Southern fare like fried chicken, collard greens, and boiled peanuts. It’s also affordable (by Charleston standards) and casual enough to bring the kids.

82 Queen – Offering an impressive menu in a charming atmosphere, 82 Queen is a fantastic dining experience. It’s one of my favorites for celebrating a birthday or anniversary. The limoncello cake is to die for!

Lowcountry Bistro – If you prefer an upscale menu in a casual atmosphere, this is the place for you. Don’t miss their grits! They’re made with goat cheese (and sweet potato or butternut squash in season). Amazing!

Poogan’s Porch – Arguably one of Charleston’s most famous restaurants, Poogan’s offers a delightful dining experience coupled with a bit of Charleston history, including its own ghost story. I always enjoy the fried alligator with honey jalapeño dressing.

Page’s Okra Grill – Located across the Ravenel Bridge in Mount Pleasant, Page’s is worth the drive for their shrimp and grits alone. I highly recommend their stewed tomatoes and okra as well. Page’s is a family-friendly eatery with a fabulous dessert case!
